Man jailed for attack on Sir Alex

Sir Alex was in London for a function when he was attacked
A man who drunkenly assaulted Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson at a railway station has been jailed for 15 months.
Kevin Reynolds, 44, admitted punching Sir Alex in the groin before headbutting a police community support officer at Euston station last month.

Reynolds, originally from Fife, Scotland, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court.

Sir Alex is not believed to have been badly hurt during the incident.

This is not something I expect to happen to me when I am going about my daily business

Statement from Sir Alex Ferguson

Sir Alex later told police in an impact statement: "He really gave me a whack. At the time my natural instinct was to react and defend myself.

"However, I decided against it as I did not know if he was carrying any weapon and might come at me again."

He added: "This is not something I expect to happen to me when I am going about my daily business and it completely stunned me."

Reynolds, who was branded a "significant risk to the public", spotted Sir Alex outside Euston railway station, staggered towards him and delivered a single blow.

His "stunned" victim promptly doubled up in agony and, as he fought for breath, managed to gasp: "What the hell are you doing?"

Reynolds promptly insisted: "I'm sorry Fergie, I didn't realise it was you."

But almost immediately afterwards he held out his arms and started shouting: "Fergie, Fergie, shut your mouth."

Reynolds, who had been binge drinking on vodka and lager, then butted and racially abused a police community support officer trying to detain him.

Other officers quickly arrived at Euston Station and overpowered him.

Reynolds' criminal record features a total of 146 convictions, including many for violence, over nearly a quarter of a century.

England wait on Hargreaves injury

Hargreaves has played just three games for Manchester United
England v Israel
Wembley Stadium
Saturday, 8 September
Kick-off: 1700 BST
Live coverage on BBC One, BBC Radio 5live & the BBC Sport website

England boss Steve McClaren has confirmed midfielder Owen Hargreaves is a doubt for Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel at Wembley.

Hargreaves missed training on Wednesday with a thigh injury and is struggling along with Steven Gerrard, while Frank Lapmard and David Beckham are out.

"Thankfully a scan only revealed a small problem," said McClaren.

"We're still hoping he will be available for Saturday, and he is definitely not ruled out."

He added: "We'll give Owen as much time as we can before making a decision.

"He's a determined character and we know that he really wants to play. Naturally, we won't take any unnecessary risks with him though."

We will just scrape qualification and get to the quarter-finals if we are lucky. No improvement

newfroogle

The Manchester United player was recently sidleined for his club with tendonitis and has yet to play two games in a week following his £18m summer switch to Old Trafford from Bayern Munich.

McClaren says the two problems are not related and also revealed Liverpool midfielder Gerrard is being closely monitored as he recovers from a broken toe.

"We did have some positive news on Steven Gerrard yesterday, when he played a part in training without any problems," he said.

"We will continue to assess him closely and stay in regular contact with the medical staff at Liverpool, before making any decision as to whether he will play.

"As I've already said, regardless of who is injured, we are looking forward to Saturday with confidence.

"I've told the players we have enough ability in the dressing room and it's up to us to go out and the get result. We're good enough to do so."

Chelsea midfielder Lampard is ruled out with a thigh injury, while Beckham's knee problem has ended any hope of the LA Galaxy star playing any part.

The absence of Hargreaves, who missed the recent friendly against Germany because of a knee injury, would mean McClaren having to seriously reassess his midfield options.

England, who are three points behind leaders Croatia in Group E, have not ruled out giving Gerrard an injection to enable him to play against Israel, though Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is against giving him a jab.

Despite being a doubt for Saturday's game, Hargreaves has been in confident mood about England's qualification chances.

"It doesn't matter where we are in the table just now," said the 26-year-old Hargreaves.

"Croatia, Russia and Israel have done well so far but we are only halfway through the group, so we will see who is there at the end."

"I don't see any more anxiety around the camp for this game," added the Manchester United midfielder.

"We know what we have to do. Israel will pull everybody behind the ball. They hardly tried to get forward when they were at home, so I don't imagine it will be any different on Saturday.

"I am sure they will be happy with a draw but if we can take our chances early on, and score a goal or two, it could be a comfortable game for us."

England rocked by Beckham injury

Beckham had his right knee bandaged after being substituted
England have suffered a major injury scare ahead of September's Euro 2008 qualifiers after David Beckham hurt his knee playing for LA Galaxy.
Beckham, 32, was taken off during the Superliga final with Pachuca after twisting his knee in a block tackle.

"At this stage it's hard to tell, but it doesn't feel good," said Beckham.

"A ligament strain is four to six weeks but we'll have to wait for the results of the scan on Friday. If it is four to six, I won't be flying to England."

Beckham, who has had recent problems with an ankle injury, added: "I went into the tackle a little light because of my ankle and tried to compensate for that.

"I'd have been better off not doing it at all. Maybe it's a sign that I need a rest and don't come back until it's right."

Give your reaction to Beckham's latest injury

England entertain Israel at Wembley on Saturday 8 September and then host Russia four days later.

The Galaxy lost the match to the Mexicans 4-3 on penalties and Beckham, who stayed in the treatment room after half-time, returned to the touchline in a suit when the match went into extra-time.

"I was on the treatment bed," he said. "But when it went to extra-time I wanted to be out there on the field, cheering the lads on as best I could."

Beckham had earlier been quoted as saying that if England reach the Euro 2008 finals in Austria and Switzerland, he will be fitter than he has been at previous international tournaments.

Beckham told the Daily Express: "If we do qualify, I'll be a lot more rested than people playing in the Premier League.

"That is a big advantage of being in the USA, where the fixture calendar is different. It's also the advantage of the shorter season from April to October here.

"If we make it to the finals, I will be a lot fresher going into games."

Anelka was linked with a move to Old Trafford

Bolton striker Nicolas Anelka has ended speculation over his future by signing a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2011.
Anelka, 28, has been linked with a move away from the Reebok, with several Premier League clubs interested.

But he said: "I seem to have been linked with every club in the country of late, but my heart is with Bolton.

"I am very happy with my form, the club and the manager so signing a new contract was not a difficult decision."
Anelka signs new deal with Bolton
French international Anelka joined the Trotters from Fenerbahce last summer for £8m, signing an initial four-year deal.

However, the much-travelled forward recently hinted he could leave if the club's poor start to the season continued.

This shows our ambition to be amongst the top clubs, not just in this country but across the world of football

Sammy Lee
But he seems to have been convinced of their ambition, adding: "Hopefully we will prosper together because I would not have remained at Bolton if I'd thought we could not win trophies."

Bolton boss Sammy Lee added: "It is a fantastic boost that Nicolas has agreed to stay with us.

"We have worked tirelessly behind the scenes to get him to commit his long-term future to us.

"Nicolas is one of the world's best strikers and I am immensely proud and happy that he has shown such commitment to the club.

"It's also a boost for the dressing room because a team never wants to lose anybody of Nicolas's stature and presence.

"This shows our ambition to be amongst the top clubs, not just in this country but across the world of football."

Give your thoughts on Anelka's new deal

The Trotters lost their opening three matches under new manager Lee following a summer in which Anelka was linked to the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Portsmouth.

"If I have to leave, it'll be because of bad results," he said last week.

"I want to be in a team that rivals big clubs not one playing to finish 10th or 15th. I want to rediscover a big club."

Anelka, who has played for Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League, has rediscovered his best form while at Bolton and is now a regular in the France team.

Trotters defender Nicky Hunt has also signed a new four-year deal with the Trotters.

Meanwhile, Scotland Under-21 manager Archie Knox has joined Bolton's backroom staff.
The former Manchester United, Rangers and Everton assistant boss will work under Sammy Lee as coaching co-ordinator.

Man Utd striker Solskjaer retires

Solskjaer has scored 126 goals in his Man Utd career
Manchester United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has retired from football.
The 34-year-old, who scored the winner in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999, has been battling knee injuries for four years.

"I would like to thank manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the coaching and medical staff and most of all the supporters," Solskjaer told the club website.

He added: "They have been fantastic and were a real inspiration to me when I was out injured."

Solskjaer has caused many a curse from opposing teams

BBC Sport's Phil McNulty

The player's father Oyvind Solskjaer said: "He would have liked to stay on and was hoping for a 100% recovery.

"But something has happened with his knee which made it impossible for him to continue."

Solskjaer, who will remain at the club as a coach, joined United from Molde for £1.5m in 1996 and the former Norway international has made 366 appearances for United, scoring 126 goals.

He also collected six league championship and two FA Cup medals with United.

Ferguson said: "Ending your playing career is a sad day for anyone, in the case of Ole, he has 11 fantastic years he can look back on.

He has been a great servant to the club and has always remained a model professional

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson

"Ole has achieved everything a player could ever wish to achieve.

"He has been a great servant to the club and has always remained a model professional in his responsibility as a player, in his demeanour and his manners have always been exemplary. Ole will hopefully go on to be a good coach."

The club's chief executive David Gill said: "Ole has provided us all with some exceptional memories during his time here at the club.

"Nobody will ever forget his dramatic winner in Barcelona, but much more than that his dedication and professionalism make him one of the great role models in football.

"Ole will be dearly missed as a player, but will go on to serve the club as an ambassador and a valuable coach."

Solskjaer scored 11 goals as the Red Devils reclaimed their Premier League crown last season.

His last game for Sir Alex Ferguson's side was the FA Cup final defeat to Chelsea on 19 May when he came on as an extra-time substitute at Wembley.

He has already spent time at United coaching young players and was appointed a club ambassador last year.

The retirement of Solskjaer leaves Ferguson with only three strikers - Wayne Rooney, Louis Saha and Carlos Tevez - the latter being the only one presently fully fit.

Ferguson has been linked with a move for Bolton's Nicolas Anelka and Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov, although the latter has insisted his immediate future lies at White Hart Lane.

I would like to thank manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the coaching and medical staff and most of all the supporters

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

United have sold fellow strikers Alan Smith to Newcastle and Giuseppe Rossi to Villarreal.

Tevez has also been included in Argentina's squad for the friendly against Australia in Melbourne next month, which could further stretch Ferguson's resources.

Saha, whose own United career has been dogged by injury, had hoped to make his return against Spurs at the weekend but his comeback was aborted.

He is expected to be fit to face Sunderland at the weekend, but his persistent knee problems have proved a major cause of concern.

Solskjaer returned to fitness last term, and was hopeful of playing a meaningful role this season, despite undergoing minor knee surgery in June.

But he has had problems during his rehabilitation and recently admitted he fully expected this to be his last season.

Now the announcement that one of Old Trafford's most popular figures is quitting the game has been brought forward.

Man City 1-0 Man Utd

By Chris Bevan

Geovanni celebrates after putting Man City ahead
Manchester City made it three Premier League wins out of three this season with a shock win over rivals United.

United dominated from the off and Nani forced Kasper Schmeichel into two good saves early on as City hung on.

The home side had created nothing until they took the lead when Geovanni's shot deflected home off Nemanja Vidic.

Vidic hit the bar as United continued to pour forward but City, led by the impressive Micah Richards, held out and United are still winless this campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side have taken only two points from their first three games and the champions are now seven points behind City at the summit of the table.

It has been the perfect start to the season for the Blues and their new boss Sven-Goran Eriksson who is yet to see his hastily-assembled side concede a goal.

That statistic seemed unlikely early on as United started like a train and, with City struggling to keep the ball let alone do anything constructive with it, it seemed just a matter of time before they took the lead.

Inside the first five minutes Nani forced an instinctive block out of Schmeichel and the young keeper did well to hold a firm shot from the same player soon after.

United had set up camp inside City's half by now and another neat move set Patrice Evra running clear only for him to slice his shot horribly wide.

City, who had lost Valeri Bojinov to injury early on too, were simply hanging on and if not for the brilliant Richards they would surely have collapsed.

England coach Steve McClaren is short of centre-backs for Wednesday's friendly with Germany and he will surely be glad he can call on the 19-year-old City defender to play there if needed.

Richards, nominally a right-back, began the season in the centre under Eriksson and has emerged as a real star of the new Eriksson regime.

He made one brilliant tackle to deny Tevez as the Argentine closed in on goal and then made a timely clearance after Schmeichel had dropped a Giggs cross.

But at the other end City were still creating absolutely nothing and it was a total shock when they took the lead on 32 minutes.

With United's defence backing off, Elano fed Geovanni who let fly with a 25-yard shot that span off Vidic's back and swerved into the corner of the net.

If anything, City controlled the remainder of the half but United were soon threatening again after the break.

Vidic beat Richard Dunne to Giggs' corner but saw his header cannon off the crossbar before another dangerous Giggs cross was somehow cleared from danger by Richards.

Yet more United possession followed and Tevez went close to levelling when he flicked another Giggs ball agonisingly wide.

But the goal would just not come for Ferguson's men and their frustrating afternoon was summed up in injury time.

Another Giggs corner found it's way to Tevez at the far post but the Argentine could not react quickly enough to find the target with his header and City survived again.

Heinze wants arbitration hearing

Heinze has had a brief break after the Copa America
Gabriel Heinze will take his dispute with Manchester United to a Premier League arbitration panel next week regarding his wish to leave the club.
The Argentine wants to join Liverpool and claims he has a letter from United which would allow him to leave if a club offered a fee of £6.8m.

However, United insist they made it clear Heinze would not be permitted to join one of their title rivals.

Heinze, 29, has two years still remaining on his United contract.

Interview: Liverpool chief exec Rick Parry

Despite the row over his future he has vowed to "carry on like a professional" and is continuing pre-season training with the Old Trafford club.

And he met manager Sir Alex Ferguson at United's Carrington training ground yesterday to discuss his future, having confirmed he has brought in lawyers to try to force through a move to Anfield.

Previously United chief executive David Gill said he was happy the club was in the right.

"He is a contracted player for two years and unless we receive an offer which is acceptable to us as a club, he will remain with us," he said.

Gill says that prior to Liverpool revealing their interest, he verbally informed Heinze's agent that United would not be prepared to sell him to any of their three major domestic rivals.

That conversation is thought to have been recorded, and if so, could feasibly be used as evidence if the matter ended up in court.

Ferguson believes Heinze's representatives have unsettled the defender.

"I think that if we could take away the agent's role in this I don't think an awful lot is wrong with Gabi's position at the club," said Ferguson.

"We've looked after Gabi very well. He had his cruciate knee operation and we looked after him.

"We let him do his rehabilitation in Spain, which he wanted and I think he's delighted at how we've treated him. We've conducted ourselves in a way that suited Gabi perfectly."

But Heinze, who signed from Paris St Germain in 2004, is thought to be keen to leave, and the large Spanish-speaking contingent at Anfield may be an attraction.

If he did end up at Liverpool, Heinze would become the first player to go directly from Old Trafford to Anfield since Phil Chisnall in 1964.

Beckham misses Superliga defeat

Beckham watches from the sidelines as Galaxy slump
David Beckham missed Los Angeles Galaxy's 2-1 defeat to Mexican side Chivas de Guadalajara but took his place on the bench at the LA Coliseum.
The 32-year-old failed to recover from the ankle injury he picked up playing for England in the European Championship qualifiers on 6 June.

Beckham has only managed 12 minutes play since his high-profile move to the Galaxy, in a friendly against Chelsea.

He is expected to make his Major League Soccer debut at Toronto on 5 August.

Second-half goals from Francisco Rodriguez and Omar Bravo gave Chivas victory, with Landon Donovan grabbing a late consolation for the Galaxy.

Beckham was a surprise inclusion in the Los Angeles squad, having been categorically ruled out by coach Frank Yallop on Friday.

He had failed to train all week and missed last Tuesday's SuperLiga opening victory against CF Pachuca.

Yallop will make a decision on Monday about whether Beckham will travel with the squad to Dallas for Tuesday's must-win final group game in the cross-border competition.

"We were real happy he wanted to be a part of the team and on the bench. He was excited and animated and he wants this team to win," said Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas.

"He's frustrated. He wants to play and to a certain extent he feels he's letting people down.

"But this is a long-term process. He's going to be with us for a long time and we need to get him 100% healthy."

Beckham makes brief Galaxy debut

Beckham was up against some familiar faces in the Chelsea side
David Beckham finally made his debut for Los Angeles Galaxy when he came on as a substitute for the last 12 minutes of his club's 1-0 defeat by Chelsea.
England midfielder Beckham, 32, who has been struggling with an ankle injury, got a good reception from the capacity 27,000 crowd at the Home Depot Center.

But he was unable to turn the tide in favour of the United States team after John Terry scored in the 49th minute.

The match was part of Chelsea's pre-season tour of the United States.

Beckham's debut in pictures

Asked to describe his feelings after making his debut for the Major League Soccer team, Beckham said: "It was very emotional - I think just proud of the way people reacted to me today personally.

"I think to have a full stadium like we did today is credit to the supporters and credit to the people in LA that have supported the MLS for many years, and with a full stadium tonight it has been amazing.

"The reaction to me when I just either take my top off or kick the ball has been incredible but it makes me feel a little bit embarrassed at times when I get that sort of reaction.

"But it's incredible and I have to thank the people and the fans for coming out to watch the game tonight."

Beckham made a few deft touches in his brief time on the pitch and managed to withstand a heavy challenge from Chelsea new boy Steve Sidwell.

"I'm not fit and I haven't trained since I have been out here," added Beckham. "The ankle is swollen and we'll see how it is tomorrow.

"I sprained it in the England game and I played four days after I pulled the ligaments.

"Then I had the last game of the Spanish season a week after and I had three injections to numb it and I played in that game without any feeling in my foot.

Neither the League nor the Galaxy is putting pressure on David to play - that is absolutely not happening

MLS commissioner Don Garber

"There are always going to be problems after that but that's what I wanted to do, to play in that game.

"It has been five weeks since that game and this sort of injury usually takes six or seven weeks to heal.

"It's a lot better, it's making progress - it's not a serious injury."

MLS commissioner Don Garber insisted that the decision for Beckham to play was Beckham's alone.

Garber told BBC Five Live Sport: "It was up to David and he felt he was fit enough to come in. Neither the League nor the Galaxy is putting pressure on David to play - that is absolutely not happening."

Among those in the crowd were Beckham's wife, Victoria, Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and actors Katie Holmes, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Love Hewitt, John Hurt and Ray Winstone.

Chelsea captain Terry scored the only goal just after the break, firing in a powerful shot after being lined up by Joe Cole.

"LA played the game with a lot of passion, I think maybe they waited to show David Beckham they have a team," said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.

"They were highly motivated and they gave us a hard game. I think this is the correct attitude to play football.

"If they continue doing this, they will get results and they will improve."

League warns West Ham over Tevez

Tevez has his heart set on a move to Manchester United
The Premier League has warned West Ham they risk more disciplinary action over the Carlos Tevez saga if they do not receive a transfer fee for the striker.
BBC sports editor Mihir Bose reports that West Ham face action if they do not "assert their rights" over Tevez.

Tevez wants to join Manchester United but the deal has reached an impasse.

Businessman Kia Joorabchian insists he owns the 22-year-old's economic rights but the Premier League says West Ham must receive any transfer fee.

The confusion was created last season when West Ham failed to inform the Premier League they had entered into an agreement with Joorabchian's company when they signed Tevez and fellow Argentine Javier Mascherano.

The Hammers were fined £5.5m and warned that Tevez would be unable to play for them while the third-party agreement was still in place.

I suspect what will happen is that Tevez will tell Fifa that he doesn't want to go back to West Ham

BBC sports editor Mihir Bose

West Ham immediately ripped it up - but Joorabchian claims he did not agree to that.

However, the Premier League is now insisting that Tevez's transfer must only involve West Ham and Manchester United.

Bose said: "The Premier League says it is only asserting its rule book.

"West Ham said the third-party agreement was torn up therefore they have the right to the player, they decide where the player goes and what the money involved is.

"I understand a deal was agreed with Manchester United several weeks ago.

"The terms are he will go on a two-year loan and that a loan fee will be paid to Joorabchian's company of about £10m.

"The player himself will get about £4.5m a year and Manchester United could buy the player but would probably have to pay another £30m."

He added: "I suspect what will happen is that Tevez will tell Fifa that he doesn't want to go back to West Ham and the world governing body will have to resolve whether a player can be forced to stay at a club."

It is understood Tevez's camp believe the Premier League can no longer act as independent arbiter in the case.

The Argentine has already written to the League and West Ham to ask them to terminate his Hammers contract - a request refused by both parties.

Fifa says it may be prepared to step in - but the matter would first have to go through the Football Association, which oversees domestic transfers.

A spokesman said: "Fifa considers the Tevez situation to be a domestic matter and therefore of the competence of the FA.

"If Fifa was to receive a formal request from any of the parties involved, it would look at the matter.

"However, the possibility exists that we would still determine that it is the FA who is competent to decide on the case."

Carlos Teves is into soccer combat transfer speculation

Robert Millward
London, England (AP) - Thierry Henry for Barcelona? Samuel Eto'o for Arsenal? Didier Drogba for AC Milan? Transfer speculation is increasing in Europe, with big stars linked with moves even though there is no hard evidence they want to leave their current clubs.

While most of Europe's stars are resting aching muscles, their agents have gone into overdrive. The newspapers and sports magazines feed off every word and spin them into speculation.

When Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said there was a clause in David Beckham's contract to keep the England midfielder at the club _ rather than move to Major League Soccer with the Los Angeles Galaxy next month _ the player's agent was quick to deny it.

"There is no intention of getting out of the Galaxy deal or reneging on the Galaxy deal," Simon Oliveira said.

When France Football magazine reported that Barcelona was negotiating a deal with Henry to leave Arsenal for the Spanish club, his agent not only dismissed the report but said he would sue.

Henry, who still has three years left on his Arsenal contract, isn't saying exactly where he will be next season. While some reports suggested that Henry and Barcelona's Eto'o might swap clubs, media in Spain quoted the Cameroon star as saying he would love to play alongside the French star at Barcelona.

"I'm staying. If it weren't true, I'd say it as nobody is forcing me to stay," Eto'o said Tuesday. "And if they want to get rid of me, they should tell me so I can start looking. But I don't think the club has thought of selling me."

But the speculation goes on and on, and fans across Europe are scratching their heads wondering who's going where.

La Gazzetta dello Sport said Chelsea's Drogba was "intrigued by Milan," although the paper suggested that Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti seemed more interested in signing Eto'o.

Promoted back to Serie A after being relegated in a match-fixing scandal, Juventus is looking to strengthen its squad and reportedly is chasing Klaas Jan Huntelaar of Ajax Amsterdam.

Carlos Tevez is another star in demand.

The Argentinean forward's goals helped West Ham win its fight against relegation from the Premier League, although his appearances for the Hammers caused a major storm. West Ham's rivals said he shouldn't have been allowed to play for the London club, which admitted it broke Premier League rules by signing him from a third party.

Inter Milan and Manchester United are among clubs being linked with Tevez, although the Red Devils have already been busy in the transfer market.

After winning his ninth Premier League title and taking the championship from Chelsea, United manager Alex Ferguson signed Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich, Brazilian midfielder Anderson from Porto and Portuguese winger Nani from Sporting Lisbon.

The arrivals _ for a combined $98.8 million _ are proof that American owner Malcolm Glazer is prepared to back Ferguson with transfer funds.

At Liverpool, there are reports that coach Rafa Benitez is furious that his own American owners aren't giving him the same support.

Immediately after Liverpool lost the Champions League final to AC Milan on May 23, Benitez said the club needed to act quickly to strengthen the squad with big names. So far George Gillett Jr. and Tom Hicks have kept the Liverpool checkbook in their pockets. Gillett backed Benitez on Tuesday but added the club would not squander its money "like a drunken sailor."

After a poor season in which it finished fourth in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich signed Italian forward Luca Toni and French winger Franck Ribery. Claudio Pizarro has departed for Chelsea and Bayern Munich wants to get Miroslav Klose from Werder Bremen, which wants his World Cup partner Lukas Podolski in return.

Even if it wins the Spanish League on Sunday for the first time in four years, Real Madrid is likely to make several changes.

The "Galactico" era is over at the Bernabeu, with Beckham following Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Roberto Carlos through the departure door. They could even be followed by coach Fabio Capello.

According to Spanish media reports, Madrid is keen on hiring AC Milan's Kaka and Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, while Chelsea winger Arjen Robben is another transfer target.

Chelsea, the biggest spender thanks to Russian owner Roman Abramovich, has been strangely quiet, despite the arrival of Pizarro from Bayern on a free transfer and midfielder Steve Sidwell from Reading. AP

Malaysian attention back on Asian Cup after MU match scrapped

KUALA LUMPUR (AP): Stung by criticism for trying tosimultaneously organize the Asian Cup and a visit by Manchester United, Malaysian authorities have returned all their attention to the marquee regional soccer event.

The English Premier League champions were forced to scrap plans for an exhibition match in Kuala Lumpur on July 27, leaving Malaysia free to focus on hosting Asian Cup Group C matches, a quarterfinal and a semifinal.

"There are no distractions now, so we are confident that we will be ready to be a fantastic host," Hamidin Mohamad Amin, head of Malaysia's logistics committee for the Asian Cup, told TheAssociated Press.

"Our preparations are in tiptop condition in the important areas such as ensuring security and suitable accommodation for the teams and foreign visitors."

Hamidin said Malaysia was no stranger to hosting high-profile events, having organized many political, economic and sporting events including the 1998 Commonwealth Games and an annual Formula One Grand Prix.

Malaysia's facilities were never the big worry for the Asian Football Confederation, which strenuously objected to Manchester United's planned visit for fear that it would distract Malaysia from properly promoting the Asian Cup matches. Malaysia's co-hosts are Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Despite Malaysia's insistence that it could handle both the Asian Cup and United's visit, the AFC compelled the powerhouse British club to scrap the Malaysian portion of its upcoming Asian tour.

It pointed out that the Malaysian government and the Football Association of Malaysia had contractual obligations with the AFC not to host any other soccer competition during the Asian Cup.

The FAM's assistant general secretary, Noor Kefli Mohamad Sulong, said the AFC should not fret any longer about Malaysia's commitment to the Asian Cup, since promotional banners and posters adorn prominent streets and an advertising campaign has been launched.

Beckham assured of England future

Beckham (left) needs to maintain his form to impress McClaren
David Beckham says England coach Steve McClaren has given him assurances about his international future.
Beckham, 32, will join LA Galaxy from Real Madrid in the summer but has been told by McClaren that he can keep his England place.

The former England skipper said: "Without a doubt, the manager has already made me aware of that.

"As long as my fitness is right, and I'm playing like I have been for the last six months, there's no problem."

Beckham has starred in his recall to the England colours, after his international career appeared to be on the rocks following England's exit from last summer's World Cup.

The Real Madrid midfielder set up John Terry's goal in his comeback match against Brazil, and then set up two more in England's Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia.

Beckham's only good at set pieces; this shouldn't be enough to justify a place

Many thought Beckham's move to America's MLS would make it difficult for McClaren to pick the midfielder.

But Beckham said: "Some people think I'm going into semi-retirement, I don't see it as that.

"My fitness will be the same as it is now, if not better. I don't think that's going to be a worry.

"There's some people who think I can play for another two or three years at the top, and I'm one of those people."

Beckham confirmed that Sunday's clash with Real Mallorca will be his last for Madrid, who made a vain attempt to buy the England midfielder out of his contract.

Victory for Real will guarantee their first La Liga title since 2003, and will see Beckham end his time in Spain on a high note, with his first major honour for Madrid.

Nani completes medical at Man Utd

Anderson (left) and Nani look to be on their way to Old Trafford
Manchester United have moved a step closer to completing the signing of Sporting Lisbon winger Nani after the Portuguese player passed a medical.
The club have agreed "in principle" deals to sign Nani, 20, from Sporting Lisbon and Brazilian midfielder Anderson, 19, from FC Porto.

Nani now needs international clearance before the move to the Premiership champions is signed and sealed.

Owen Hargreaves will also join United on 1 July from Bayern Munich for £17m.

I could not imagine I would ever get to work with a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson but it has happened. What can I say? It is a dream the size of the world

Brazilian midfielder Anderson

Anderson has described the proposed move to Old Trafford as " a dream come true".

He said: "I cannot wait to play in the same team as Cristiano Ronaldo, who is a great player, as well as Wayne Rooney and many more.

"I could not imagine I would ever get to work with a manager like Sir Alex Ferguson but it has happened. What can I say? It is a dream the size of the world."

Anderson has been named in Brazil coach Dunga's squad for the Copa America in Venezuela next month but was not in the squad to face England at the new Wembley on 1 July.

The teenager, whose full name is Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira, had his last season at Porto disrupted by a broken leg, but he started nine matches for Porto this season, scoring twice, and came on as a substitute six times.

He joined Porto from Gremio in December 2005 and played against United in a pre-season friendly last August at the Amsterdam Tournament.

Nani had also been linked with a move to Tottenham, but recently said he would only leave Portugal to play for a club like United.

This is absolutely brilliant news for United

MU

Nani, whose full name is Luis Carlos Almeida da Cunha, was born in the Cape Verde islands and has been compared to his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, with pace and trickery similar to that of the Footballer of the Year.

He has played five times for Portugal, scoring once in the process. This season he featured 29 times for Sporting Lisbon, scoring five goals and he will be viewed as the long-term successor to Ryan Giggs.

David Robert Joseph Beckham, OBE (pronounced IPA: /'bɛk.əm/) (born 2 May 1975) is an English professional footballer who currently plays for Real Madrid and the England national football team. Beckham was named as a member of Pelé's FIFA 100.[3] In addition to his success on the pitch, Beckham has been recognized by Time magazine as one of 2004's Time 100 (Heroes & Icons),[4] as well as an elite global advertising brand.[5]

Beckham is the fifth most capped English player of all time, has twice been the runner up in the FIFA World Player Of The Year Award in 1999 and 2001 and in addition to being the only Englishman to score in three different World Cups, is also the fifth player in World Cup history to score twice from direct free kicks. He was captain of the English national team from 15 November 2000 to 2 July 2006.

Beckham's career began when he signed a professional contract with Manchester United, making his debut first-team appearance in 1992, at the age of 17. While with Manchester United he played a key role in their dominance of the FA Premier League in the 1990s and early 2000s, being pivotal in accomplishing The Treble of the League, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 1999. He left the club to become only the third Englishman to sign for Real Madrid in 2003, after Laurie Cunningham and Steve McManaman.

In 2006, after England's quarter-final exit at the World Cup in Germany, he stood down as captain.[6] Beckham was dropped from the England national team squad selected by coach Steve McClaren on 11 August 2006,[7] an exile that lasted nine international games, until May 26, 2007, when McClaren named him as one of the England squad for upcoming games against Brazil and Estonia.[8]

On 10 January 2007 Real Madrid Sporting Director Predrag Mijatovic announced Beckham would leave the club when his contract expires in June 2007. On 11 January 2007, Beckham agreed to a move to the Major League Soccer (MLS) team Los Angeles Galaxy on a five year contract commencing on 1 July 2007, after his current deal with Real Madrid expires.[9]

Childhood and early career
Beckham was born in Leytonstone, East London, the son of David Edward Alan "Ted" Beckham, a kitchen fitter and Manchester United fan, and Sandra Georgina West,[10] a hairdresser. He regularly played football in Ridgeway park, Chingford as a child. His maternal grandfather, Joseph West, is Jewish,[11] and Beckham has spoken of the influence the religion has had on him but is not known to practice Judaism or any other faith, though he stated in his book Both Feet on the Ground that growing up he always attended church with his parents and sisters.

His parents were fanatical Manchester United supporters who would frequently travel to Old Trafford from London to attend Manchester United's home matches. David inherited his parents' love of Manchester United and his main sporting passion was football. He attended one of Bobby Charlton's football schools in Manchester and won the chance to take part in a training session at FC Barcelona, as part of a talent competition. As a child he played for a local youth team called the Ridgeway Rovers coached by his father, Stuart Underwood and Steve Kirby.

He was Manchester United's mascot for a match against West Ham United in 1986. Young Beckham had trials with his local club, Leyton Orient, and attended Tottenham Hotspur's, which was the first club he played for, school of excellence. He also attended Bradenton Preparatory Academy, but signed schoolboy forms at Manchester United on his fourteenth birthday, and subsequently signed a Youth Training Scheme contract on 8 July 1991.

He was part of an exceptionally talented group of young players at the club who guided the club to win the FA Youth Cup in May 1992, with Beckham scoring in the second leg[12] of the final against Crystal Palace. He made his first appearance for United's first-team that year, as a substitute in a League Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion, and signed his first professional contract shortly afterwards. United reached the final of the Youth Cup again the following year, with Beckham playing in their defeat by Leeds United, and he won another medal in 1994 when the club's reserve team won their league.

He went to Preston North End on loan in the 1994–95 season to get some first team experience, then made his first Premier League appearance for Manchester United on 2 April 1995, in a goalless draw against Leeds United.

Manchester United

Becoming a first-team player
United manager Alex Ferguson had a great deal of confidence in the club's young players. When three of his first-team players left the club at the end of the 1994-95 season, his decision to let youth team players replace them instead of buying players from other clubs, drew a great deal of criticism. The criticism increased when United started the season with a 3–1 defeat at Aston Villa,[13] with Beckham scoring United's only goal of the game; however, United won their next five matches and the young players performed well. Beckham became a regular player on the team and helped them to win the Premiership and FA Cup double that season, scoring the winner in the semi-final against Chelsea and also taking the corner that Éric Cantona scored from in the FA Cup Final. Still, Beckham's form was not good enough to break into the England squad before Euro 96.

In August 1996, Beckham became something of a household name when he scored a spectacular goal in a match against Wimbledon. With United ahead 2–0, Beckham noticed that Wimbledon's goalkeeper Neil Sullivan was standing a long way out of his goal, and hit a shot from the halfway line that floated over the goalkeeper and into the net.[14] Beckham was frequently mentioned in the press, and he made his first appearance for the England national football team on 1 September 1996, in a World Cup qualifying match against Moldova. He became an automatic first-choice player at United that season, helping them to retain their league championship, and was voted PFA Young Player of the Year by his peers.

United started the 1997-98 season well, but their performance deteriorated when several players got injured. They finished the season in second place, behind Arsenal.

World Cup 1998
Beckham had played in all of England's qualifying matches for the 1998 FIFA World Cup and was part of the England squad at the World Cup finals in France, but the team's manager Glenn Hoddle publicly accused him of not concentrating on the tournament,[15] and he did not start in either of England's first two matches. He was picked for their third match against Colombia and scored from a long-range free kick in a 2–0 victory, which was his first goal for England.

In the Second Round (last 16) of that competition, he received a red card for violent conduct in England's match against Argentina.[16] Beckham, after having been fouled by Diego Simeone, he kicked out at Diego Simeone, striking him on the calf. Simeone later admitted to trying to get Beckham sent off by over-reacting to the kick and then, along with other members of his team, urging the referee to send Beckham off.[17] The match finished in a draw and England were eliminated in a penalty shootout. Many supporters and journalists blamed him for England's elimination and he became the target of criticism and abuse, including the hanging of an effigy outside a London pub, and the Daily Mirror printing a dartboard with a picture of him centred on the bullseye. Beckham also received death threats after the world cup and the incident is also the topic for his Adidas advert. [18]

1998-99 season (the Treble)
In the 1998-99 season, he was part of the United team that won the treble — Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, a unique feat in English football. There had been speculation that the criticism that he had received after being sent off in the World Cup would lead to him leaving England, but he decided to stay at Manchester United.

Throughout the season, Beckham was jeered by opposition supporters whenever he touched the ball, but he consistently played well and his crossing provided a significant number of goals for United's forwards Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole. United's supporters had mostly forgiven him for the problems he'd had with England, and were frequently heard to chant "Argentina" in response to the other supporters' taunts.

To ensure they would win the league championship, United needed to win their final league match of the season, at home to Tottenham Hotspur, but Tottenham took an early lead in the match. Beckham scored the equaliser and United went on to win the match and the league.

Beckham played centre-midfield in United's FA Cup final win over Newcastle United and for the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final against Bayern Munich, since United's first string centre-midfielders were suspended for the match. United were losing the match 1–0 at the end of normal time, but won the trophy by scoring two goals in injury time. Both of the goals came from corners taken by Beckham. Those kicks, coupled with great performances over the rest of the season, led to him finishing runner up to Rivaldo for 1999's European Footballer of the Year and FIFA World Player of the Year awards.

1999-2000 season
Despite Beckham's achievements in the 1998-99 season, he was still unpopular among opposition fans and many journalists, and he was heavily criticised after being sent off for a deliberate foul in Manchester United's World Club Championship match against Necaxa. It was suggested in the press that his wife was a bad influence on him, and that it might be in United's interests to sell him,[19] but his manager publicly backed him and he stayed at the club.

The relationship between Ferguson and Beckham began to deteriorate, possibly as a result of Beckham's fame and commitments away from football. In 2000, Beckham was given permission to miss training to look after his son Brooklyn, who had gastroenteritis, but Ferguson was furious when Victoria Beckham was photographed at a London Fashion Week event on the same night, claiming that Beckham would have been able to train if Victoria had looked after Brooklyn that day. He responded by fining Beckham the maximum amount that was permitted (two weeks' wages – then £50,000) and dropping him for a crucial match against United's rivals Leeds United. He later criticised Beckham for this in his autobiography, claiming he hadn't been "fair to his team mates".[20] Beckham had a good season for his club, though, and helped United to win the Premier League by a record margin.

Winning over the England fans
The abuse that Beckham was receiving from English supporters peaked during England's 3–2 defeat by Portugal in Euro 2000, when a group of England supporters taunted him throughout the match.[21] Beckham responded with a one-fingered gesture and, while the gesture attracted some criticism, many of the newspapers that had previously encouraged his vilification asked their readers to stop abusing him.[22]

On 15 November 2000, following Kevin Keegan's resignation as England manager in October, Beckham was promoted to team captain by the caretaker manager Peter Taylor, and then kept the role under new manager Sven-Göran Eriksson. He helped England to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup Finals, with their performances including an impressive 5–1 victory over Germany in Munich. The final step in Beckham's conversion from villain to hero happened in England's 2–2 draw against Greece on 6 October 2001. England needed to win or draw the match in order to qualify outright for the World Cup, but were losing 2–1 with little time remaining. The rest of the England team were playing relatively poorly, and it was Beckham's inspirational performance that lifted his teammates. When Teddy Sheringham was fouled some eight yards outside the Greek penalty area, England were awarded a free-kick and Beckham ensured England's qualification with a curling strike of the kind that had become his trademark. Shortly afterwards, he was voted the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2001. He once again finished runner-up, to Luis Figo of Portugal, for the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

Metatarsal injury
On 10 April 2002, Beckham was injured during a Champions League match against Deportivo La Coruña, breaking the second metatarsal bone in his left foot. There was speculation in the British media that the injury might have been caused deliberately, as the player who had injured Beckham was Argentinian Aldo Duscher, and England and Argentina were due to meet in that year's World Cup.[23] The injury prevented Beckham from playing for United for the rest of the season, but he signed a three-year contract in May, following months of negotiations with the club, mostly concerning extra payments for his image rights. The income from his new contract, and his many endorsement deals, made him the highest-paid player in the world at the time.[24]

World Cup 2002 and final season at United
He was partially fit by the time of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and played in the first match against Sweden. Beckham scored the winning goal of the match against Argentina with a penalty, causing Argentina to fail to qualify for the playoff stage. England were knocked out of the tournament in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Brazil. The following month, at the opening ceremony of the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, Beckham escorted Kirsty Howard as she presented the Jubilee Baton to the Queen.

Following an injury early in the 2002-03 season, Beckham was unable to regain his place on the Manchester United team, with Ole Gunnar Solskjær having replaced him on the right side of midfield. His relationship with his manager deteriorated further on 15 February 2003 when, in the changing room following a defeat to Arsenal, Sir Alex Ferguson kicked a football boot that struck Beckham over the eye, causing a cut that required stitches. The incident led to a great deal of transfer speculation involving Beckham, with bookmakers offering odds on whether he or Ferguson would be first to leave the club.[25] Although the team had started the season badly, their results improved greatly from December onwards and they won the league. He was still a first-choice player for England, however, and he was awarded an OBE for services to football on 13 June.[26]

During his 11 years stint at United, Beckham made 266 appearances for them and scored 61 goals.

He won 6 Premiership titles, 2 FA Cup's, 1 UEFA Champions League, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 FA Youth Cup with his time at United.

Real Madrid

Beckham (right) and Zinedine Zidane at Real MadridManchester United had been keen to sell Beckham to Barcelona[27] but he refused to go there, instead signing a four-year contract with Real Madrid, worth a potential €35 million.[28] The transfer was completed on 1 July and made him the third Englishman to play for the club after Laurie Cunningham and Steve McManaman. It was speculated that Real's desire to sign him came from the merchandising opportunities he would bring as well as from his football ability. For example, Real Madrid shirts bearing his name and number sold out in Madrid on the day his transfer was completed and the club were expected to receive €624,000 for the sale of the shirts. Although Beckham had worn the number seven shirt for Manchester United and England, he was unable to wear it at Madrid as Raúl had the right to wear it written into his contract. Being a fan of Michael Jordan, he decided to wear 23 instead.[citation needed]

First season 2003-04
Beckham immediately became a favourite with the Real Madrid supporters, scoring five times in his first 16 matches, but the team, whose club president expected them to win either the Spanish league or the Champions League each season, was not performing well. He had further problems in April 2004, when the British tabloid News of the World carried claims by his former personal assistant Rebecca Loos that he and Loos had had an extramarital affair. A week later, the Malaysian-born Australian model Sarah Marbeck claimed that she had slept with Beckham on two occasions. Beckham dismissed both accusations as "ludicrous".[29] Real Madrid finished the season in a disappointing fourth place, and were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Euro 2004
Beckham played in all of England's matches at Euro 2004, but the tournament was a disappointment for him. He had a penalty saved in England's 2-1 defeat to France and badly missed another in a penalty shootout in the quarter final against Portugal. England lost the shootout and went out of the competition.

Second season, 2004-05
In July 2004, while Beckham was in pre-season training in Spain, an intruder scaled a wall at the Beckhams' home while carrying a can of petrol. Victoria and their children were in the house at the time, but security guards apprehended the man before he reached the house.[30] Beckham made more headlines on 9 October 2004 when he admitted intentionally fouling Ben Thatcher in an England match against Wales in order to get himself booked. Beckham was due to receive a one-match suspension for his next caution, and had picked up an injury which he knew would keep him out of England's next match, so he deliberately fouled Thatcher in order to serve his suspension in a match that he would have had to miss anyway. The Football Association asked Beckham for an explanation of his actions and he admitted that he had "made a mistake" and apologised.[31]

Beckham became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in January 2005 and was involved in promoting London's successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.[32]

Third season, 2005-06
Real Madrid had another disappointing season, finishing second to Barcelona (with a 12 point gap) in the La Liga and only reaching the last sixteen in the Champions League after losing to Arsenal by a goal. Although there is the notable fact that Beckham led La Liga in assists for the season.

Warming upIn October 2005, Beckham's sending off against Austria made him the first ever England captain to be sent off and the first (and only) player to be sent off twice while playing for England. He captained England for the 50th time in a friendly international against Argentina the following month. He was sent off again shortly afterwards, this time in a league match for Real Madrid against Valencia CF. Having received a yellow card, he appeared to sarcastically applaud the referee and was given a second yellow card, causing an automatic dismissal, although the suspension was cancelled on appeal two days later. He was sent off for the third time that season on 3 December 2005 in a league match against Getafe.

During the season, Beckham established football academies in Los Angeles and east London and he was named a judge for the 2006 British Book Awards.[33]

Fourth season, 2006-07
Out of favour with manager Fabio Capello, Beckham started only a few games in that season, normally as a substitute, as Jose Antonio Reyes was normally preferred on the right wing. In the nine matches Beckham started, Real had lost seven.

On 10 January 2007, after prolonged contract negotiations, Real Madrid's sporting director Predrag Mijatović announced that Beckham would not remain at Real Madrid after the end of the season. However, he later claimed that he was mistranslated and that he actually said that Beckham's contract had not been renewed yet.[34]

On 11 January 2007 Beckham announced that he had signed a five-year deal to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy from 1 July 2007. The deal is worth $250 million over the 5 years. On 13 January 2007 Fabio Capello said that Beckham had played his last game for Real Madrid, although he would continue to train with the team.[35] Capello back-tracked on that statement and Beckham rejoined the team for their match against Real Sociedad on 10 February 2007 – he scored and Real Madrid won.[36] However the next game at home against Real Betis ended up with Beckham being shown a straight red card for a professional foul in the 90th minute. But in the next UEFA Champions League match vs Bayern Munich, he carried out two assists to help Real Madrid win by 3-2 and won fans' appreciation. If Beckham moves to Los Angeles and transfers to the Galaxy as currently planned, this match would seem to mark his final appearance in the UEFA Champions League as Real Madrid were knocked out of the competition (by the away goals rule) at the conclusion of their second leg away tie in Munich on 7 March 2007. He has made a total of 103 appearances in the League, the third highest number of any player at the time.

After his good performances for Real Madrid, Steve McClaren announced Beckham could be recalled for England's two Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Andorra. However on 4 March 2007 Beckham damaged a ligament in his right knee during a game between Real Madrid and Getafe CF. Following a cross his momentum carried him into an advertising boarding along the touchline causing him to go down. On 21 April 2007 he marked his return from injury by coming off the bench to set up the winning goal for Sergio Ramos in a 2-1 victory over Valencia.

On 26 May 2007, Steve McClaren announced that Beckham would be recalled to the England squad for the first time since relinquishing the captaincy after England's exit from the 2006 World Cup. He is now set to take part in England's upcoming friendly with Brazil, as well as the Euro 2008 group E qualifier against Estonia.

World Cup 2006
During the FIFA World Cup 2006, England were seen as a potential winner by many, but since the start of the competition the team had several slow paced matches and Beckham's performance was criticised by the majority of the press and public. However, many still considered Beckham's contribution to England important as the team progressed to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

In England's opening game against Paraguay on 10 June 2006 Beckham's free kick led to an own-goal by Carlos Gamarra, and England won 1-0. In England's next match, played against Trinidad and Tobago on 15 June 2006, Beckham's cross in the 83rd minute led to Peter Crouch's goal which put England ahead 1-0. Beckham gave another assist to Steven Gerrard. In the end they won 2-0. He was named Man-of-the-Match by tournament sponsor Budweiser for this game. The English media criticised Beckham's performance in England's final Group B match against Sweden on 20 June 2006,[citation needed] citing his apparent inability to take the ball around players as an increasing hindrance to England's chances of winning the World Cup.

During England's second round match against Ecuador, Beckham scored from a free kick in the 59th minute, becoming the first ever English player to score in three World Cups,[37] and giving England a 1-0 victory and a place in the quarter-finals. He was sick before the game and vomited several times as a result of dehydration and illness after he scored the winning goal.

In the quarter finals stage of the World Cup against Portugal, Beckham was substituted following an injury shortly after half time and the England team went on to lose the match on penalties (3-1), the scores having been 0-0 after extra time. After his substitution, Beckham was visibly shaken and emotional for not being able to play, being in tears at one point.

A day after England was knocked out of the World Cup, an emotional Beckham made a statement in a news conference saying that he had stepped down as England captain,[38] saying, "It has been an honour and privilege to captain my country but, having been captain for 58 of my 95[39] caps, I feel the time is right to pass on the armband as we enter a new era under Steve McClaren." He was then succeeded by Chelsea captain John Terry.[40]

Having stepped down as captain after the World Cup, Beckham was dropped completely from the England national team selected by new coach Steve McClaren on 11 August 2006. McClaren claimed that he was "looking to go in a different direction" with the team, and that Beckham "wasn't included within that". McClaren said Beckham could be recalled in future. Shaun Wright-Phillips, Kieran Richardson and the World Cup alternative to Beckham Aaron Lennon were all included, and are likely to compete for what was Beckham's place on the right-wing in future, although it seems that McClaren will employ Steven Gerrard on that side.

There was talk that McClaren could recall Beckham after Aaron Lennon sustained an injury in early September and Owen Hargreaves subsequently broke his leg.[citation needed] However despite pressure from the media and high profile sports figures Bobby Robson, Glenn Hoddle, Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen all saying he should be in the England team,[citation needed] McClaren did not recall Beckham. In December, 2006, McClaren suggested that Steven Gerrard had supplanted Beckham's role in the team: "We all know about David Beckham and his delivery from the right-hand side. But Stevie's set-plays and crosses from the right are as good as anybody in the world."[41]

England recall
On 26 May 2007 David Beckham was recalled to the national team for the first time since the 2006 World Cup, for the friendly against Brazil and the Euro 2008 qualifier against Estonia after some excellent performances for Real Madrid and after England's poor form during qualification for Euro 2008. Beckham's comeback game is likely to be against Brazil, England's first game at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium, on June 1, 2007.[42] He has stated his intent to continue to play for England after his move to the MLS, however the LA Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas stated he would not be happy to release Beckham for inappropriate friendlies.[43]

L.A. Galaxy and U.S. Soccer
It was confirmed on 11 January 2007 that David Beckham would be leaving Real Madrid to join MLS team Los Angeles Galaxy on a 5 year deal worth $250 million that will see Beckham earn up to $10 million a year in direct salary, but with endorsements and profit-sharing, Beckham could earn up to $50 million a year and earning about 90 dollars every second on the field.[44] Beckham said, "After considering several options to stay in Madrid or join other major British and European teams, I have decided to join LA Galaxy."[9]

Beckham had departed Manchester United in July 2003 to sign for Real, who paid £25m for the midfielder's services. However, in the three-and-a-half seasons since his arrival, the Spanish giants have failed to win any major trophies. The 2006-07 season proved particularly disappointing for Beckham, who was dropped by England coach Steve McClaren and then fell out of favour with Real boss, Fabio Capello, who has allowed Beckham only seven starts in over 25 matches this season. As of January 2007, his form had been disappointing, with just 12 league goals scored in his entire time at Real Madrid.

On 12 January 2007, Beckham's official press conference was held, via satellite from Madrid, in conjunction with the 2007 MLS SuperDraft in Indianapolis, IN. All MLS announcements concerning Beckham's signing and his press conference (as well as the Super Draft) were a part of the NSCAA National Soccer Coaches Association of America annual convention.[45] At the press conference, Beckham told reporters "I'm coming there not to be a superstar. I'm coming there to be part of the team, to work hard and to hopefully win things. With me, it's about football. I'm coming there to make a difference. I'm coming there to play football... I'm not saying me coming over to the States is going to make soccer the biggest sport in America. That would be difficult to achieve. Baseball, basketball, American football, they've been around. But I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't think I could make a difference."[46]

On 13 January 2007, Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello stated during a news conference that Beckham would never again play for the team, saying that he could practice, but would not be permitted to put in any minutes in actual matches for the remainder of his time under contract.[47][48] A month later however, Beckham not only returned to the first team with a start against Real Sociedad, but he also scored the game's equalizing goal in a 2-1 victory.[49]

On 14 January 2007, when a new "SuperLiga" was announced for a new North American championship, it was reported that Beckham could make his Galaxy debut during that tournament.[50]

On 15 January 2007, published reports quoted Major League Soccer spokesman Stephen Rodriguez as saying that MLS would now try to get Beckham over to the LA Galaxy in time for the start of the MLS season in April. Such a move would require a buy-out of his remaining Real Madrid contract, which would amount to a transfer fee.[51] Later the same day, MLS Commissioner Don Garber denied that his league was attempting to secure an early MLS debut for Beckham.[52]

On 17 January 2007, the U.S. publication Sports Illustrated released a detailed report on the blockbuster contract and the economics behind it.[53]

Discipline
Beckham spent long hours on the training pitch honing his talents to perfection, particularly his trademark free kick. Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson said that he "practiced with a discipline to achieve an accuracy that other players wouldn't care about".[54] He maintained his training routine at Real Madrid and even when his relationship with management was strained in early 2007, Ramon Calderon and Fabio Capello have praised Beckham for maintaining his professionalism and commitment to the club.[55][56]

Beckham was the first England player to ever collect two red cards and the first captain to be sent off for the England team.[57] Beckham's most notorious red was during the 1998 FIFA World Cup: after Argentina's Diego Simeone had fouled him, Beckham appeared to lash out with his leg and the Argentinean timed his fall to make it appear that he had been kicked. At the time, Beckham's reaction was mostly criticized as selfish and bad sportsmanship on Beckham's part and the front page of the Daily Mirror read "10 heroic lions, one stupid boy". England went on to lose the game on penalties, Beckham was vilified back in England for the act but was later to redeem himself with many sterling performances. He was also somewhat vindicated as Simeone's "fall" was criticized as an example of the Argentineans' play-acting, and Simeone himself later admitted to purposedly trying to foul Beckham.

For Real Madrid he has so far amassed 26 yellow cards and 4 red cards.[58]

Beckham has also been described as a "gentleman" multiple times. During his time as England captain, Beckham helped to keep Wayne Rooney's temper in check on several ocassions.[59]

Personal life
In 1997, Beckham started dating Victoria Adams, widely known as "Posh Spice" of the pop music group Spice Girls, and their relationship attracted a great deal of media interest. The couple were dubbed "Posh and Becks" by the media. He proposed to Victoria on 24 January, 1998 in a restaurant at Cheshunt.

He married Adams at Luttrellstown Castle, Ireland on 4 July 1999. The wedding attracted tremendous media coverage. Beckham's teammate Gary Neville was the best man, and the couple's son Brooklyn, then four months old, was the ring bearer. The media were kept away from the ceremony, as the Beckhams had an exclusive deal with OK! Magazine, but newspapers were still able to obtain photographs showing them sitting on golden thrones.[60] 437 staff were employed for the wedding reception, which was estimated to have cost £500,000.[61]

The Beckhams, who came to be known almost universally as "Posh and Becks", have three sons: Brooklyn Joseph Beckham (born 1999), Romeo James Beckham (2002) and Cruz David Beckham (2005).

In April 2004, Beckham's former personal assistant Rebecca Loos, sold a story to a tabloid newspaper in which she claimed to have had a four month affair with Beckham, which he described as "ludicrous".

In an 3 April 2006 interview, Beckham told The Daily Mail that he suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder.[62]

Fame beyond football
Beckham's fame extends beyond the pitch; in much of the world his name is "as instantly recognisable as that of multinational companies like Coca-Cola and IBM."[63] Beckham's relationship and marriage to Victoria, who had been famous in her own right as part of the musical group Spice Girls, contributed towards him becoming a major celebrity outside of football. He has recently moved into the world of aftershave along with Victoria with the release of his own line of scents, David Beckham Instinct. The Beckhams are reported to be getting paid $13.7 million to launch their perfume in the US. (January 25, 2007). Beckham's name was searched for on Google more than that of any other sporting personality in 2003 and 2004.[64]

Beckham has also become an internationally recognized sex symbol because of his 'metrosexual' tendencies in fashion and because of his immense gay following,[citation needed] which he recognized and has publicly appreciated.[65]

Charitable work
Beckham has supported UNICEF since his days at Manchester United and in January 2005 the England Football Captain became a Goodwill Ambassador with a special focus on UNICEF's Sports for Development programme.
He recently hosted the "World Cup Party - Full Length and Fabulous" at his mansion in Hertfordshire, raising money for three charities, including the Beckhams' own charity. Over 500 of the richest and most famous faces in England made appearances.
On 17 January 2007, Rebecca Johnstone, a 19 year old cancer patient in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada had a surprise phone call from Beckham. After the conversation, he sent her a Real Madrid Jersey with his signature on it. Rebecca passed away on 29 January 2007.[66]
In March 2007, it has been suggested that David made an appearance in the Comic Relief video for "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", which was performed by The Proclaimers alongside Peter Kay as Brian Potter and Matt Lucas as Andy Pipkin. The video featured a range of British television, music and sports personalities, such as Elton John, Tony Blackburn, Sonia and Des Lynam chanting along with the track. However it was claimed in Heat magazine that it was in fact only a 'look-a-like' and not the actual David Beckham

Appearances in films
Beckham never appeared in the 2002 film Bend It Like Beckham except in archive footage. He and his wife wanted to make cameo appearances but scheduling proved difficult so the director used lookalikes instead.[67]

Beckham makes a cameo appearance with Zidane and Raùl in the 2005 fictional film Goal! where he says hello to the main character during a party about halfway through the film. In Goal! 2: Living the Dream...,[68] Beckham appears as himself again, when the film's lead gets a roster spot on the Real Madrid squad. This 2006 sequel is also the second part of a trilogy, and the story this time centres around the Real Madrid team. Besides Beckham, other real life Real players also appear on and off the pitch alongside the fictional characters.

Records
Beckham captained England 58 times during his tenure as England captain.[citation needed]

With his free kick goal against Ecuador in the second round of the 2006 World Cup, Beckham gained membership into two of football's most exclusive clubs: he became the only English player — and the 21st player regardless of nationality — to score in three world cups. Real Madrid team-mate Raùl also achieved this feat a few days earlier.[69] It also made him only the fifth player in World Cup history to score twice from direct free kicks; the other four were Pelé, Rivelino, Teófilo Cubillas and Bernard Genghini (Beckham had previously scored this way against Colombia in the first round of the 1998 World Cup). All three goals were against South American teams (Colombia, Argentina, and Ecuador) and from set pieces (the two aforementioned free kicks and a penalty against Argentina).

Tattoos controversy
Beckham has many tattoos on his body, one of which is the name of his wife Victoria but it is written in Hindi rather than English because Beckham thought it would be "tacky" to have it written in English. The tattoo is misspelt, however, so the tattoo actually reads "Vhictoria" rather than "Victoria".[70] Another tattoo, written in Hebrew reads אני לדודי ודודי לי הרעה בשושנים, "I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine, that shepherds among the lilies." This is from the Song of Songs in the Hebrew Bible, and a popular Jewish paean to fidelity. Beckham has also been ridiculed in the press for looking like a "Hell's Angel biker" and a "football yob" due to his ever-expanding number of tattoos, their design and location.[71]

A chronology of Beckham's tattoos [72] includes:
1 - April 1999 - Son Brooklyn's name on his back.
2 - April 1999 - An angel on his back.
3 - 2000 - Hindi "Victoria" design on his left arm.
4 - April 2002 - Roman numeral VII on right forearm
5 - May 2003 - Latin phrase "Perfectio In Spiritu", meaning "Spiritual Perfection", on his right arm
6 - May 2003 - More Latin, "Ut Amem Et Foveam" or "So That I Love And Cherish", on his left arm.
7 - 2003 - Romeo's name on his back.
8 - 2003 - Classical art design on his right shoulder.
9 - 2004 - Winged cross on his neck.
10 - 2004 - Angel with motto "In The Face of Adversity" on right arm.
11 - Mar 2005 - Cruz's name on his back.
12 - June 2006 - Second angel and clouds added to right arm and shoulder.
